Color Your Nature Wall Art
Women in three Bangladesh workshops worked together to create the finished product – including the handmade cotton paper, screen printing, bamboo hanger, and handmade paper box. Meaning “nature” in Bengali, fair trade organization Prokritee supports over 1500 rural artisans who use renewable materials – from recycled sari to natural fibers – to create inspired product designs. The income women earn through employment with Prokritee helps them secure proper housing, adequate food and education for their children.
With every item purchased with us, a tree is planted in partnership with the National Forest Foundation.
Before paper was invented, a variety of natural products were used to write on, including the bark and leaves of trees such as those of palm and plantain, as well as specially treated cloth, leather and parchment. The plants used in paper making are fast-growing and indigenous to the area in which the paper is being made, so different materials are used in different regions of Bangladesh. Plants used include flax, sunn hemp, daphne, water hyacinth (an invasive species), sisal, bamboo and bagasse – the fibrous remains of sugarcane after the juice has been extracted.
